American-German artist ERIC ANGELO BESSEL has been delving into the boundaries of Portland's post-rock/darkwave/dream pop with layers of ambient and drone, and after forming LORE CITY with his wife LAURA MARIPOSA WILLIAMS at the end of 2011, he began writing and producing songs in earnest. He has been touring the northwestern United States and dividing his time between playing in bands and working in the visual arts. In high school, he spent time playing guitar and photographing hardcore bands playing shows in nearby towns from a musician's perspective, and the stage and visual sensibilities he developed during that time live on in the connection between sound and image he creates today. His second solo album in 2025 is a 12-song instrumental work that reconstructs the nostalgic sounds of the Mellotron and the multi-timbral sounds of the ALESIS synths with a current sensibility. The sound is characterized by a carefully tuned balance between lo-fi textures and a clear sound image. As per the concept of "an ambient landscape of scattered artificial clouds and bioluminescent water surfaces" and "a quiet black mirror surface where the past, present, and future mingle," a series of sounds continues to evoke memories while blurring the sense of time. TENDONS," in which layers of strings rise slowly and faint noises create depth; "SNOW GLOBE," in which glassy keyboard phrases and thin string harmonies are repeated with a snowy quality; "SCAVENGERS," in which the rough sound of strings burned onto an old tape floats in the air; "RECOMMEBINANT," with its unstable chords and shimmering synths; and "NON-DIEGETETIC," in which sounds appear and disappear like scene transitions in a movie. This album is a cross between the sensibility nurtured around Portland's LORE CITY and the sound texture where the past and future overlap, as in the case of THE CARETAKER, and is positioned as a work of 2025 that can be listened to with the theme of "transformation of memory" in particular in the flow after US ambient/drone music. SPIN describes it as "a ghostly sound reminiscent of THE CARETAKER," and OBSCURE SOUND calls it "a heartbreaking ambient success," with a quiet tone that makes you want to concentrate and listen.
