If one were asked to choose an album that represents British jazz of the 1960s, the New Jazz Orchestra's Le Dejeuner Sur l'Herbe would be a strong candidate. It is a collection of many of the important trends that had developed in British jazz over the preceding years, and it also foreshadows much of the jazz of the future. Under the creative leadership of Neal Ardley, and featuring some of Britain's finest jazz musicians, the sessions feature unique interpretations of works by John Coltrane and Miles Davis, as well as some of the most distinctive The band also played compositions by some of the most distinctive jazz composers working in the UK at the time. Engineer Howard Barrow and producer Tony Reeves capture it all beautifully, as do Jack Bruce, who would become one of Cream's founding members, Barbara Thompson, Ian Kerr, Michael Gibbs, Dave Gerry, Dick Hextall-Smith, and the great John Heisman, who formed one of the greatest jazz/progressive/rock bands of all time, the Coliseum, and other great musicians of the era and genre!
