This is a live recording of Italian jazz heavyweight, trumpeter Enrico Rava and American veteran tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano, who has Sicilian ancestry, made in November 2018 at the Auditorium Parco della Musica in Rome. The quintet features lyrical pianist Giovanni Guidi, dynamic drummer Gerald Cleaver, and bass virtuoso Deslon Douglas. The album focuses on the two bandleaders' favorite originals, including Enrico's complex originals M-1 and M-2 and Lovano's energetic Texas blues M-3. The album also features a powerful medley of Lovano's "Drum Song," Coltrane's "Spiritual," and "Over The Rainbow" on M-5, which traces the history of modern jazz! Although the two masters have known each other for a long time, they have rarely played together, but they are both music adventurers conscious of tradition and pursuing their art based on a shared aesthetic. Lovano recalls hearing Lava for the first time in the 1970s and comments as follows.When I listen to his sound, I can hear his love for the music of Miles Davis, Chet Baker, Art Farmer, Kenny Dorham, and Dizzy Gillespie, but I can also hear his love for the music of Don Cherry. That kind of openness and great passion for jazz inspires me as well. So I've been thinking for years that one day we would finally play together. And now I am very happy with this album."
