Description:
This is the first release from Underground Orchestra, the new project of popular saxophonist Chris Potter, who also plays in the Pat Metheny Unity Group. The group includes Dam Rogers, Craig Taborn and Nate Smith from the long-running Underground Quartet, two bassists, a string quartet, and Steve Nelson, Potter's old colleague from his days with the Dave Holland Quintet, who plays vibes and marimba. This is the first release from this large ensemble, which also includes Steve Nelson on vibes and marimba, an old colleague of Potter's from his days with the Dave Holland Quintet. The album's title track is a suite of movements subtitled "Compassion," "Dualities," "Disintegration," and "Rebuilding. The breadth of this work and its various moods and thematic developments bring out the best in Potter's playing. His saxophone begins a dialogue and improvisation with the talented members of the ensemble that goes far beyond the landscape he had envisioned for himself.The other four pieces, "Lament," "Firefly," "Sky," and "Shadow Self," expand on the feeling of the suite and nicely connect the tightly written sections with the open and free sections played by the entire orchestra. The quotations are multi-idiomatic and multi-cultural; Potter's greatest enthusiasm was for Charlie Parker with Strings, but he also envisioned a contemporary composition with Arabic and Indian strings.
