Trio Mocoto is best known as the powerful backing band that supported Brazilian legend Jorge Ben during his creative explosion in the early 1970s. But their contribution to the music goes beyond a supporting role. It should be noted that they were instrumental in the formation of the genre that would later become known as samba funk, a vivid fusion of traditional Brazilian rhythms with the groove and energy of American soul/funk.
Formed at the iconic São Paulo nightclub Jogral, Trio Mokoto (Fritz Escobán, Joandinho Paraíba, and Neheu Gargaro) began their musical journey as resident musicians, supporting the live music of the performers they replaced. It was here that Jorge Ben first encountered their raw talent and undeniable chemistry, and eventually invited them to join his band. The result was a collaboration that would later become an era.
