Jazz legend Ron Carter, now 88, releases the first gospel album of his career on Blue Note/Motown Gospel. The album includes a number of hymns that Ron's mother, Willie O. Carter, loved during her lifetime. About 30 years ago, Carter was asked by his mother to sing hymns for her before she passed away, and he composed music at home that combined these hymns and his own bass guitar, dedicating it to his beloved mother in her final hours. After some time passed, Carter and Don Woz hit it off and decided to create a hybrid jazz/gospel album based on that concept, and this album was born. Carter's bass lines and a powerful choir and ensemble that makes you feel as if you are participating in a church service are brought together by Ricky Dillard, an eight-time Grammy nominee for best gospel singer/choral conductor. A native of Detroit, Carter grew up in a local church community and was familiar with these hymns from an early age. While this new work is not traditional straight-ahead jazz, it is a portrait of his life's love of hymns, along with his family and community.The new frontier that Ron Carter, who was born in 1937, is showing us is remarkable.
