Saxophonist Dave McMurray's fourth Blue Note record is now available. It is a testament to his indomitable spirit, his love for his hometown of Detroit, and an ode to the many musicians he has worked with. A cover of Al Jarreau's classic "We Got By," featuring KEM on vocals, precedes the release of the song, and it is a soulful finish to the album. The album title came to McMurray after a deep discussion about the death of a friend who, consumed by illness, finally gave up and passed away alone. His response to that painful reality was one of fortitude. Hey, I love life, even if I'm suffering," McMurray wrote down afterward. McMurray later wrote them down, because they meant so much to him. That became the title of the album. That became the title of the album, because I wrote songs around that word," he explains. McMurray wrote six of the nine songs, all of which are filled with soulful melodic beauty, emotional immediacy, and irresistible grooves.Co-produced by McMurray and longtime collaborator Don Woz, the album was recorded at Rust Belt Studios in Royal Oak, Michigan. The group of Detroit musicians who participated were extremely talented: bassists Woz and Ibrahim Jones, keyboardists Louis Resto and Maurice O'Neill, guitarist Wayne Gerard, drummer Jeff Canady, and percussionist Mahindi Masai, vocalist Herschel Boone. The production of this album was truly a wonderful project," McMurray concludes. Everyone who participated in this project is a group of people that I love dearly.
