Tenor saxophonist/bass clarinetist David Murray's first release with impulse! Birdly Serenade is a bold and innovative sound rooted in tradition, inspired by the birds, the "original improvisers". The recording took place at Van Gelder Studios, the birthplace of many legendary works. This is his second album with an all-star trio including pianist Marta Sanchez, bassist Luke Stewart, and drummer Russell Carter, following "Francesca," an album dedicated to Murray's wife, which was named one of the best jazz albums of 2024 by the New York Times. This is his second album with the All-Star Trio. This is the latest work from the Grammy Award-winning Birdsong Project. The Birdsong Project was produced by Randall Poster and Stewart Lerman, and already includes artists from across the genre, including Yo-Yo Ma, Mark Ronson, and the Flaming Lips. The Birdsong Project has emerged as one of the most active and influential cultural projects in the world of bird conservation, in collaboration with the National Audubon Society and other partners such as the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. Commenting on the partnership and David Murray's "Birdsong Project," Grammy Award-winning producer and music director Randall Poster said, "The Birdsong Project is proud to announce that David Murray and his prodigious quartet, 'Birdly Serenade' by David Murray and his prodigious quartet. Inspired by the world of birds, these pieces of music are full of Murray's brilliance. David's compositions and performances are unparalleled.
