Joshua Redman releases his first new album in almost two years!
After winning the Thelonious Monk Competition in 1991, Joshua Redman quickly rose to the top of the jazz world and has been nominated for 11 Grammy Awards. He has released numerous masterpieces on Warner and Nonesuch, and moved to the prestigious Blue Note label in 2023. He released his first vocal project, "Here Are We," featuring rising star Gabriel Cavassa in full, which created a buzz.
This is his first new album in two years. This time around, the quartet consists mainly of Paul Cornish (p), Philip Norris (b), and Nazir Ebbo (ds), a current regular quartet of young and elite musicians, and includes eight songs. The band members have toured extensively together, and the inspiration for the new album came to them during their many tours, and they have used their soundcheck time to develop their ideas. Three of the songs feature Melissa Aldana (ts), Skylar Tan (tp), and Gabriel Cavassa (vo), who also contributed greatly to the previous album.
The theme of this album is the beauty of human imperfection, and it is impressive to see more lyrical expression in the music and phrasing than ever before. The idea for the song itself came to him during the Corona disaster. It sounded good, so I said to the guys, "Let's try it again.We played about three songs in about 10 minutes, and I realized, "I'm ready for an album. My approach to leading a band has never changed. I play with the best musicians. Not only have they mastered all the jazz vocabulary, but they are also excellent listeners and collaborators. In other words, they all know how to express their individual talents through group improvisation and collective interaction." Regarding the album's content, he added, "We are faced with a big question: what will the future look like? The mathematical approach to language confronts us with the question of what it means to be 'intelligent,' 'productive,' even 'creative. I am a humanist at heart, and I believe in the shadow of language, in what technology cannot capture.
