Anouar Brahem

Description:

Eight years after his last album, "Blue Maqams," Anuar Brahem returns with a poignant project titled after a line from a poem by poet Mahmoud Darweesh! This graceful chamber piece for oud, cello, piano, and bass casually addresses this metaphysical question and its pervasive resonance in difficult times. Brahem, while employing traditional Arabic musical forms, has consistently sought to engage with the wider world, drawing inspiration from many sources in different cultures. Bassist Dave Holland and pianist Django Bates are part of this international quartet of Tunisian oud masters, and now with the addition of cellist Aniya Lechner, they have developed a world that is the pinnacle of current ECM. Brahem and Holland's relationship, first established on the 1998 album Thimar, is legendary. Dave's playing gives me wings," said Anuar, a view that is repeatedly embodied on the record. Django Bates' piano is an important force behind the whole, contributing to the undulating solos. This is the first time Anuar has added a cellist to the group, and Anja Lechner, a key figure in the recording, has long been familiar with Brahms' work and has featured it in her own recitals. The cello is given first and last say here. The album was recorded in May 2024 at the Auditorio Stelio Moro RSI in Lugano and produced by Manfred Eicher. The album was released as the Brahem Quartet embarked on a European tour that included concerts in France, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Belgium. Anouar Brahem (oud) Anja Lechner (violoncello) Django Bates (p) Dave Holland (double b)
