Artemis, a super group of contemporary jazz's finest female players, releases its third album!
Formed in 2016 under the leadership of Lynnie Rosnes, Artemis' second album, 2023's "In Real Time," also received critical acclaim and was named Jazz Group of the Year by Downbeat magazine in the United States. This Blue Note release was recorded with a quintet formation of pianist and musical director Lynnie Rosnes, trumpeter Ingrid Jensen, tenor saxophonist Nicole Glover, bassist Noriko Ueda, and drummer Allison Miller. In addition to their own original compositions, the quintet includes covers of songs by Wayne Shorter and Burt Bacharach. This remarkable work highlights the improvisational strength of the members and their talent as composers.
The first advance single, "The Smile of the Snake," is a track from the pen of Donald Brown, a pianist whom Rosnes admires. It was first released on Art Farmer's album Blame It on My Youth (1988), and is also the song that opens the album.
The group, which debuted on Blue Note in 2020, "has the ability to move gracefully between different styles and moods, sounding alternately authoritative and playful. Artemis means gentle yet powerful, subverting expectations. The music feels like a nuanced assertion of the need for a fresh perspective" (Wall Street Journal), "The group's ability to do this is astounding" (Downbeat), and continues to garner much praise. About this album, Rosness said, "Our goal is to make honest music that resonates with people. We inspire each other and feel passionate about performing together.All of that positive energy comes through in the music, and I think the audience can sense that," he said.
