This is a live recording of the debut concert by the duo of Catalan-born, now Austria-based pianist/improviser Jordina Mira and British-born bassist Barry Guy. Together they form music of fluid, highly detailed, ever-changing moods, throwing fresh light on the meaning and possibilities of "extended techniques" in free improvisation. The musicians first met face to face at the 2017 Mixtur Festival in Barcelona, where Guy was composer-in-residence, creating a piece with a mixed ensemble of professionals and students. Mira, one of the pianists in that group, immediately stood out for her "dedication, energy, virtuosity, and creativity," and a musical friendship was forged. Guy and Mira later recorded a studio album together in 2021 on the Polish label Fundacja Sluchaj, String Fables, and Live In Munich shows great progress in the depth and expressive range of its sound, with its most intense moments of activity and even the most intense moments of activity are remarkably clear.Jordina Mira describes their swirling, undulating sound as "full of life and at the same time dark, drawing parallels with the movement of the sea, where changes of light make treasures and wonders visible. The duo's ability to listen and heightened sensitivity allowed them to sense and express the colors and sudden changes and anchor them in musical discourse." Barry Guy, renowned for his improvisational flair for maximizing the sonic possibilities of the double bass, paired well with Mira in this duo. In addition to her formidable keyboard skills, Mira opens up a new world of sound by creatively exploring the piano's interior, drawing fascinating textures and sparkling harmonics from its string harps.
