Legendary saxophonist/composer Wayne Shorter passed away in March 2023 at the age of 89. The first official posthumous work of Wayne Shorter, "Celebration Vol. 1," has been released. The album is the first in a four-part archival series that Wayne Shorter had been planning to release with Blue Note since before his death, and features a live performance at the Stockholm Jazz Festival in Stockholm, Sweden, on October 18, 2014. Led by Danilo Perez (p), John Patitucci (b), and Brian Braid (ds) in a regular quartet formation from later years, the band performs songs like "Zero Gravity," "Smilin' Through," "Orbits," "Lotus," and "She Moves Through the Fair" in The band performed thrillingly. The performance is sublime, and the band's white-hot performance is captured at one of the peak of his career. Carolina, Wayne's wife, says of this album, "In the fall of 2022, our engineer, Rob Griffin, started sending Wayne a lot of unreleased material so that he could sort through it.Wayne started listening to that soundtrack at all hours. When I was at home doing something, talking on the phone, working, he would say, 'Carolina! Come listen to this song! Listen to what this band is playing! He would yell out, 'Come listen to what this band is playing! Wayne also left detailed notes. Wayne also left detailed notes, some of which are on the album. He heard the Stockholm concert (on this album) and said, "Let's make an album of this! He heard the Stockholm concert and said, "Let's make an album of this! Then he started listening to more stuff, and as time went on he realized that one album was not enough. Wayne initially wanted to call the collection Unidentified Flying Objects. When he was last hospitalized in January 2023, he continued to select tracks and lay out the album. The 'never give up' spirit that underlies his mission was stronger than ever, and he was excited to release more music.It was not until the last ten days of his life that he realized that he would no longer be around by the time its release was realized. He felt the need to celebrate life in the time he had left, so he decided to title the series Celebration. I said, 'Yes, Wayne! Celebrate Life! That's a perfect title! I said, 'Yes, Wayne!
