With new liner notes by journalist Sean Cassey, this 1969 release on Deram Records (SML1046) is regarded as one of the top British-produced soul/R&B albums of the 1960s by an all-American girl group. It is regarded as one of the top all-American girl group albums of the 1960s among British-produced soul/R&B albums. The album was reviewed by New Music Express in July 1969 and hailed as "the made in British Motown sound." The album features the acclaimed classic soul single "Nothing But A Heartache," which spent 14 weeks in the Billboard Top 100, became a Top 40 hit in the United States, and charted in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Canada, Australia, and other countries The song has since become a classic soul single. Since then, the song has become a Northern Soul classic. The Flirtations were one of the first girl-only R&B groups active in the mid-to-late 60s, but they had to go pretty far to achieve their most lasting success. The group started out as a quartet called the Gypsies, consisting of sisters Betty, Shirley, and Ernestine Pierce and Viola Billups, and they performed under that name for three years. In 1966, Betty Pierce left the Gypsies in search of a fresh approach as a performer and recording artist, and the group went to England, where the trio changed its name to the Flirtations. As American soul began to really take off in England, the group came to the attention of Decca Records producer Wayne Bickerton and his writing partner Tony Waddington, who later contributed to the Rubettes' success in the 1970s. Bickerton and Waddington signed the trio to Decca/Deram, hired arranger and composer Johnny Harris to arrange their debut LP, and began work on the songs for one album. The Flirtations made their UK recording debut with "Someone out There," followed a year later by the '60s soul classic "Nothing But a Heartache. They toured with some of the biggest recording artists of the time, including Stevie Wonder and Tom Jones, and appeared regularly on TV shows in the UK, Europe, and around the world.Their last single, Deram's 'Give Me Love', was co-written and produced by Stevie Wonder! (He was under exclusive contract with Tamla Motown Records at the time and is therefore uncredited.)
