Description:
This second Blue Note album from six-time Grammy nominated pianist/composer Gerald Clayton features 10 original compositions by master pianist Charles Lloyd on saxophone, his father John Clayton on bass, longtime friend Justin Brown on drums, and MARO on vocals. Justin Brown on bass, and MARO on vocals, the album explores the impact and abstraction of time. Of the album, Gerald says, "Each of the musicians on the album expresses the axis of time and its shifting nature in a different way. My father John Clayton and Charles Lloyd represent the further evolution of a great generation that has greatly influenced my development, Justin Brown represents my present as a peer of my generation, and MARO, a new generation of artists, represents the future." Reflecting Gerald's desire to share more of himself with listeners and artists, the album opens with the pensive "Water's Edge," which was previously released. This laid-back song first focuses on Gerald and John, tapering off into a sad and sorrowful atmosphere, before Brown transforms the duo into a trio. Of the song, he says, "The songs I sing, play, and write are just representations of certain moments of things that are shifting. When you look at those pieces as a temporal landscape, you can read the meaning behind them. A certain piece of music written on a certain day is received in a certain way, and the next day it is received in a completely different way, and so on. By looking at things from this zoomed-out perspective, we may be able to make connections between the past, present, and future. We may be able to embrace all of our life experiences, but as we live in the present, we may be able to use the lessons from the past to help us in the future," he commented.
