This is the first work recorded in 1975 by Gateway, a trio of virtuoso guitarists John Abercrombie, Dave Holland (b), and Jack DiJohnette (ds), who have supported ECM since its early days. With a "bold and visionary spirit," to quote a review in Downbeat magazine the year the album was released, the trio set forth a unique vision of trio interplay in their first joint work under the Gateway name. The trio tackled originals by Dave Holland and Jack DeJohnette and presented a visionary idea of what a three-way conversation in jazz could be like; the Observer wrote at the time that "the telepathic ensemble and flawless playing made it hard to believe that this music was almost entirely It is hard to believe that this music was almost entirely improvised," and the project went on to release three other albums.
