Released on New Year's Day 1971, this quartet work by Garbarek was recorded in Oslo in September 1970. The album, which still conveys the freshness and excitement of discovery half a century later, marks the arrival of four Norwegian improvisers, Jan Garbarek, Terje Lippdal, Arild Andersen, and Jon Kristensen, on the fledgling ECM label. The album marks the beginning of a lifelong relationship with each of the musicians. It was the beginning of a lifelong association with each musician, and their influence would eventually reach far beyond the borders of their homeland. Christensen and Andersen stretch out, but Lipidar effectively takes center stage with his taut chords. Garbarek is immersed in free jazz. Garbarek deserves to be heard," wrote reviewer Joe Cree in Downbeat.
