Description:
Chicago-based drummer and producer Makaya McRaven makes his Blue Note debut. Known as a beat scientist, sampler, remixer, and master of the loop, he has carved his own path in the jazz world. This new album is an extension of that, delving into the history of Blue Note and remixing masterpieces spawned by Art Blakey, Horace Silver, Clifford Brown, Dexter Gordon, and others. New interpretations were added. McRaven himself not only produced but also mixed the album, maintaining the integrity of the original source material and creating a hip-hop-based yet ambient and expansive work that is uniquely his own. Rather than using the original recordings as-is, the new album features Joel Ross (vibraphone), Marquis Hill (trumpet), Greg Ward (alto saxophone), Maz Gold (guitar), Jeff Parker (guitar), Junius Paul (bass), and Deshaun Johns (tenor saxophone & flute). (tenor sax & flute) joined the band for a new recording. As a producer, he has put together a diverse sound. The first track "Franks Tune," which is now available for download, is a hard pup tune that originally appeared on "Easterly Winds" released by Jack Wilson in 1967. In this remix, the song was revived in an 80's R&B style, as if one could imagine people dancing to a two-step dance groove. Art Blakey's voice is featured at the beginning and end of the song. The album is also unique in that each song is given an AKA (alias), with "Franks Tune" being named "De'Jeff's Tune. For this album, McRaven assembled the album to sound like a continuous set, like a show at a single live house. The imagery seems to place the album somewhere in the timeline of the transition from bebop to hard bop: "I was inspired by the idea of young musicians moving from one band to another, like a rite of passage, and wanted to focus on a certain era. He states.
