The work of Kusanowski, a disciple of Mikowai Gretzki! Known as the "51st Generation" or "Starowa Wola Generation" along with Eugeniusz Knapik and Aleksandr Lason, who also made their debut in Starowa Wola in southeastern Poland, composer Andrzej Kusanowski is a special figure in the world of contemporary Polish music. Fascinated by the accordion, Kusanowski studied accordion as well as composition in Katowice, where he also became an accomplished accordionist. In his compositions, Kushanowski has created many works that bring out the true value of the accordion, which is often unfairly neglected, by placing it in the leading role, as well as orchestral and chamber works such as "Symphony No. 2" commissioned by Penderecki and "String Quartet No. 1" which won first prize in the Artur Malawski Composition Competition in Cracow. The first prize winner of the Krakow Artur Malawski Composition Competition, the "String Quartet No. 1," and many other important works in orchestral, chamber, and vocal music. The "Reliefs" on this 2-CD set are a series of independent works written for various instruments, voices, and ensembles, and here again the accordion, which was central to Kushanowski's musical life, makes many appearances.Also, "Relief III," written for organ, won first prize in a composition competition held in Kamien Pomorski, Poland, in 1985.
