Description:
A young, ambitious work that won first prize at the Paderewski Competition. Borowicz, the guardian of Polish music, portrays the profound Romanticism in the tradition of Franck! Born in Poland, Zygmunt Stojowski (1870-1946) gained fame as a beloved pupil of Paderewski and later as an educator in New York. A long-awaited new recording (recorded in 2025) has arrived for his "Symphony in D minor, Op. 21"—one of his major works that had previously lacked recording opportunities. This "Symphony in D minor" was completed in 1898 when Stojowski was in his late twenties and won first prize at the Paderewski-sponsored competition held at the Leipzig Gewandhaus. Perhaps influenced by his studies at the Paris Conservatoire, it features cyclical formal techniques reminiscent of César Franck's symphony (also in D minor) and rich harmonic progressions making extensive use of chromaticism. Though successful at its premiere, this underappreciated masterpiece was later buried by the tide of history as "too conservative" with the rise of modernism. Conducted by Łukasz Borowicz, a master whose contributions to the discovery and revival of Polish music are unparalleled.A highly accomplished musician who studied under Antoni Wit, served as Artistic Director of the Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra, and currently holds the position of Music Director of the Poznań Philharmonic Orchestra. This is a valuable recording, his first since the Wit release (Naxos). Luxembourg's music magazine Pizzicato praised it, stating: praised it as "a performance so passionate it makes Wit's recording pale in comparison," adding, "From its suspenseful, mysterious opening to its explosive climax, his skill in building drama is superb." This is a dense musical experience, distilling the transitional Neo-Romanticism. It is an essential recording for both undiscovered symphony enthusiasts and fans of Polish music. Tokyo M Plus
