Emil Gruensten's collection of Beethoven's late piano sonatas! Emil Gruensten's Beethoven is released with Grieg's Sonata for Violin and Piano (DACOCD 964) with Benedicte Damgaard. Beethoven's piano music is a repertoire with which Gruensten has been "a very close friend" and shared "the good times of everyday life" since his first attempt at "For Elise" at the age of 8 or 9. The project to record the late sonatas began when the COVID-19 pandemic "interrupted their daily lives and gave them an abundance of free time. More than just a good time, it was a serious confrontation with Beethoven. The three works in A major, E major, and A-flat major were in Gruensten's repertoire. All five pieces will be interpreted and performed with a new approach, exploring his own "Beethoven.With the help of my colleague Thomas Sorak, who teaches music theory at the Academy, the project "Reconstructing Beethoven" began in 2020. The recording sessions took place in 2023, a little over two years after the project began. Three recordings were made in the Academy's late 1930s concert hall, Op.101 and Op.106 in April during Easter week and Op.109 through Op.111 during the summer vacations. Federico Mattioli, a young sound engineer living in Copenhagen, was in charge of production and recording engineering, as he was for Grieg's album. Gruensten wrote the liner notes.
