New Orleans-based folk-rock band Halley for the Riff Raff, led by Alinda Lee Segarra, announces the release of their new album, The Navigator, in March! With roots in Puerto Rico, Alinda roamed the U.S. hitchhiking and taking freight trains when she was in her 17s, and met a good musician friend in New Orleans, where she stopped. She later decided to leave New York, where she grew up, and make New Orleans her home, and has been consistently releasing her work since her debut full-length album, "It Don't Mean I Don't Love You," in 2008. Haley for the Riff Raff is a folk/bluegrass-based band with a somewhat Latin essence and an approach to R&B and old jazz, and in 2013 they were the opening act for the Alabama Shakes, which frontwoman Brittany Howard called "one of the best live bands ever. praised the band as "one of the best live bands around." This album was inspired by Alinda's journey from the South Bronx to the downtown punk scene and beyond in order to find her own identity.The album was produced by Paul Butler, whose credits include British soul musician Michael Kiwanuka, whom she admires, and St. Paul & Broken Bones, a soul-funk band from Alabama, USA. The album features Cuban and Puerto Rican backing beats performed by doo-wop singer, Kansas-based percussionist Juan Carlos Chowland, and Devendra Banhart drummer Gregory Rogove. As never before, Alinda's voice is soulful, and the album is packed with Latin rhythms and a searing, folky sound.
