Yannis Philippakis of Foals and the late great drummer Tony Allen. The two mavericks have released a collaborative EP, Lagos Paris London In 2016, Foals frontman Yannis Philippakis was given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: a two-day session with the great drummer Tony Allen Tony 's multi-genre work with Fela Kuti, Sebastien Tellier, and Jeff Mills, which Yannis strongly respected. In a smoke-filled, 70s-inspired Parisian studio, Yannis expected to make a nostalgic Afrobeat record. But something completely different emerged: the two quickly established an intuitive telepathy, and the music germinated from jams and loops, with different touchpoints - rock, funk, jazz, dub, etc. - as the two cultures and creators collided. The music was drawn to a unique atmosphere where expression is liberated by making music for the moment.Tony's collaborators Vincent Taeger (percussion, marimba), Vincent Taurelle (keys), and Ludovic Bruni (bass, guitar) joined them, and at that first gathering, some near-finished songs were born, which were further refined in the next few The next few sessions were spent further refining the songs. Between scheduling problems and Covid's limitations, however, the recording was never completed, and Tony passed away in April 2020 at the age of 79. Yannis felt a deep obligation to complete this project, not only to honor and celebrate his friend, but also because Tony was eager to share these songs with the world. The result was the release of a five-song EP, Lagos Paris London, under the name Yannis & The Yaw.
