Sébastien Oulteau, the brilliant French cellist! Elgar and Gareth Farr Cello Concerto Collection! New Zealand composer Gareth Farr's (b.1968) Cello Concerto is a dramatic and emotional work inspired by his own family's sacrifices during World War I. The work is a masterpiece of cello and cello music. Chemin des Dames, meaning "women's passage," is also the name of the main battlefield of World War I, and illustrates the fact that this war affected not only soldiers, but also women and their families. (The premiere of this work was given by Sebastian Urtau in 2007.) Elgar's famous concerto was also composed as a reaction to the horrors of the Western Front and the massacre of so many young lives. From his home in Sussex, Elgar could hear the sound of heavy French weapons at night, a constant reminder of lost friends and the loss of the world he knew.Sebastian Urteau's performances have been acclaimed in various quarters as "a cellist of great creativity, grace, and imagination" (Strad Magazine) and "close to the soul of Rostropovich and the virtuosity of Feuermann" (Fanfare Magazine).
