A research and performance project made possible by a grant from the Hessian Cultural Foundation ◆A Life Full of Turbulence Born in 1760—four years after Mozart—in Chaslav, Bohemia, in the Archduchy of Austria, and passing away in 1812 at the age of 52 in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, France, Dussek was a composer highly praised by Haydn. He led a truly eventful life, known not only for his interactions with Empress Catherine, Marie Antoinette, and Prince Louis Ferdinand, as well as his involvement in the development of Broadwood pianos, but also for his numerous romantic affairs. ◆Establishing a Structure of Equal Dialogue Between the Keyboard and the Violin Dussek composed 38 violin sonatas. These works established a structure of equal dialogue between the keyboard and the violin. The evolution from Op. 5 (1788), composed during his Paris period, to Op. 12 (1790)—which includes the Variations on the British National Anthem from his early London years—vividly symbolizes the popularization of chamber music and the expansion of the market for sheet music among the general public. ◆Performance by Early Music Specialists Yulia Huber performs on the violin, and Miriam Altmann on the fortepiano. The two have known each other since their student days in Frankfurt and deliver a performance that is perfectly in sync down to the finest detail.
