The Movie "Wagner: A Great Life" (3-DVD Set) Starring Richard Burton Directed by Tony Palmer Conducted by Georg Solti With Japanese subtitles This 466-minute epic was described by Richard Hornack of *Opera News* as “one of the most beautiful films ever made.” Produced in 1983 by Tony Palmer to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Wagner’s death, the film was created with the cooperation and supervision of Wolfgang Wagner (1919–2010), Wagner’s grandson and a theater director. Filming took place at locations where historical events actually occurred, including Neuschwanstein Castle and Herrenchiemsee Palace in Germany, the Munich Residenz, and the Bayreuth Festival Theater, as well as in Hungary, Switzerland, Italy, Austria, and Ireland—spanning over 200 locations across six countries. The cast featured renowned actors such as Richard Burton (1925–84), Vanessa Redgrave (1937–), and John Gielgud (1904–2000), as well as renowned singers such as Peter Hofmann (1944–2010), Guinness Jones (1936–), Jess Thomas (1927–93), among other renowned singers of the era, were cast in the roles of singers. Georg Solti (1912–1997) served as music director for the film’s score, which primarily features new recordings made specifically for this film with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. The film depicts Wagner’s eventful life—from his participation in the 1849 Dresden Uprising, his flight after being placed on the wanted list, his nine-year exile in Switzerland, his relationships with several women during his exile, the invitation he received from King Ludwig II of Bavaria after his banishment was lifted, and the construction of the Bayreuth Festival Theater—a theater built exclusively for Wagner with the support of Ludwig II—was a tumultuous one, and everyone is sure to be captivated by this epic story that transcends even a comic book.
