Dave & Maurissa

Description:

For the first time in Dave's history, all songs are by the same singer, and the album is full of euphoria for the floor, for the outdoors, and for believing! It will encourage many people to do such a great work regardless of the physical distance and BPM between Detroit and London. (NB) Dave Lee has always been on the lookout for new singers and writers during his 35-year music career. This quest has resulted in many wonderful collaborations and releases with Thelma Houston, Taka Boom, Diane Charlemagne, Seal, and others. Most recently, this quest led him to Maurissa Rose and their album London / Detroit. After hearing Maurissa's voice on a Theo Parrish record, Dave contacted her, and after several lengthy phone conversations and exchanging mp3s, the two agreed that it would be much more fun to visit London than to work together remotely. Maurissa traveled from her home in Detroit to write and record an album with Dave at his studio in March 2022. The result was 11 new songs (and one cover) of soul, disco, and R&B, plus soulful house. The album is a special one for Dave Lee, and for the first time in his career, all songs were recorded by the same singer. In the album liner notes, Dave describes Maurissa as naturally creative, full of ideas, warm and unpretentious, and this is reflected in her vocal performance throughout "London/Detroit. Dave's skillfully crafted music is supported by the Detroit native's deep, passionate, yet effortless singing. As far as the musical side of this LP is concerned, Dave Lee once again proves that he is still at the top of his game and shows no signs of slowing down. Drawing on his encyclopedic knowledge of soul/funk/disco, he draws from a wide variety of styles, BPMs, and influences, from 95bpm street soul to uptempo disco and boogie flavors. The wavy synths of "You Decide," which takes Johnny Taylor's classic "What About My Love" into modern boogie territory, the soulful howler "I Feel The Sun," which picks up the tempo, and the acidic and bass-heavy "You're Giving Me Life".Mr. Lee excels at creating a modern disco-soul sound without the use of samples. London and Detroit may be two very different cities on opposite sides of the Atlantic, but this album proves that creative synergy has no distance.
