Description:
Greinke Legacy Includes Vaughan Williams: Violin Concerto in D minor Violin Concerto in D minor/ Aged Hibari/ Prelude from Two Hymns No. 1, Dusk/ Arthur Benjamin: Sonatina for Violin and Piano/ Vaughan Williams: Violin Sonata in A minor Performers Frederic Greinke (Violin) Boyd Neill (Conductor) Boyd Neill Orchestra Arthur Benjamin, conductor Michael Mariner, piano The Vaughan Williams Society's own label, Albion Records, has been featuring unknown, buried, and unpublished works by Leif Vaughan Williams. Frederic Greinke, a renowned Canadian violinist who was principal violinist of the Boyd Neill Orchestra for ten years and participated in many recordings, has premiered important works by British composers such as Britten, Iceland, Bridge, Rubbra, Berklee, and Vaughan Williams. He has been involved in the premieres of important works by British composers such as Britten, Ierland, Bridge, Rubbra, Berkely and Vaughan Williams. This album brings together Greinke's Vaughan Williams recordings, including "Violin Concerto" from 1939, "Aged Hibari" from 1940, and "Dusk" from two hymn preludes for which Greinke was concertmaster. All three pieces are in excellent new restorations by Ronald Grames. All but the "Deep Lark" were recorded for the first time at the time of release, and only the concerto is commercially available in digital format. Vaughan Williams was particularly impressed by "Fried Lark" on these recordings, and dedicated the 1954 Violin Sonata in A minor to him, composed to Greinke's virtuosic virtuosity. A recording of this work, which Greinke prepared under the supervision of Vaughan Williams prior to its premiere, is also included here. Also of note is the only recording of the work by pianist Michael Marriner, who worked closely with the composer on the work.In addition, the program includes a recording of the Sonatina for Violin and Piano, with Arthur Benjamin himself at the piano, and like the Vaughan Williams sonata on the LP disc, this authoritative recording is the first to appear on a digital disc.
