Andrei Sikura (1773-1850), who developed and popularized the Russian guitar, known for its seven-string design with an additional bass string, was born in Vilnius, Lithuania, in 1773. At first a musician who played guitar, harp, violin, piano, and treble-stringed archlute, he eventually invented the seven-string guitar, composed and arranged many pieces, and developed a dedicated repertoire.
When Vilnius was incorporated into the Russian Empire in 1795, he moved to Moscow, where he established a school specializing in the guitar and taught many students. He became popular not only for his guitar consort, but also for his ensembles that included violins and other instruments, and for his singing. In addition to his teaching and performing activities, he published books of exercises and works for the guitar, as well as books on theory and practice.
However, when Napoleon's army approached Moscow in 1812, he moved to St. Petersburg to take advantage of the Russian scorched earth campaign in Moscow, and continued to increase the popularity of the guitar through the same activities as in Moscow until his death there 38 years later.
This 2-CD set offers a wide variety of Sikla's activities, from a grand fantasy based on a motif from "The Magic Bullet" to an arrangement of a Russian song.
The performance is led by Ainur Begutov, a musician based in the town of Kazan, well known for his singing in the opera "Boris Godunov," and the recording was made in Kazan. Located about 700 km east of Moscow, Kazan is a multi-ethnic city with a population of about 1.3 million.
The booklet (12 pages, in English) includes a commentary by Ainur Begutov, who performed the piece.
