Organ Music that Adorned the Worship Services of the Church of England
Blinded in an accident at the age of two, Stanley began playing the organ at All Hallows Church in London at the age of nine, and was appointed organist there at the age of eleven. At the age of 22, he was appointed church organist of the Inner Temple Society in London, a position he held for 52 years until his death.
As a church musician whose primary duties were liturgical, John Stanley was required to accompany the worship music each Sunday and to play voluntaries at various points in the service. Voluntaries are primarily improvised pieces, and Stanley's duties included playing the introduction and one or two movements for solo parts before the first reading, and the introduction and fugue at the end of the service.Stanley's improvisations were reportedly so great that on Sundays, Handel himself, who attended St. George's Church in Hanover Square, would sometimes leave church early and rush to Temple Church to hear Stanley play.
The instrument used for the recording was an organ installed in 2000 at the Church of St. Michael the Archangel in the village of Rocca Massima in the mountains near Rome, with a pitch of A=440 Hz.
The booklet (English, 12 pages) includes a commentary by Romeo Cuffa, a multi-classical musician well versed in keyboard and wind instruments.
