The recording includes two soprano cornet concertos and ten vocal pieces by Viadana and six organ pieces by Canale, for a total of 18 pieces recorded in Mantova, his birthplace. The booklet (12 pages in English and Italian) includes commentary by conductor Federico Del Sordo, as well as Latin lyrics and English translations of the vocal pieces. Viadana Lodovico da Viadana [1564-1627] was appointed music director of the cathedral in Mantova on January 7, 1594. At the same time, Jaques de Wert [c.1535-1596] was court music director and Monteverdi [1567-1643] was strings player at the court of Mantova.Perhaps because Mantova was less remunerative, Viadana resigned three years later in 1597. Thereafter, he moved to Venice, Rome, Padua, Cremona, Concordia, Fano, and his hometown of Viadana, and finally died in Galtieri. Canale Floriano Canale [1541-1616] was born in Brescia, Northern Italy, and is in the process of being fully researched and studied on the 400th anniversary of his death in 2016, but his instrumental canzon with a title is a nice combination with the vocal music of Viadana.
