Description:
Founded by Benedict of Nursia in 529 A.D., the Abbey of Montecassino is still considered the ancestral monastery of the Benedictines. 744 the abbey was granted independence, but lost its territory to the Kingdom of Naples in 1503 and to Sardinia from 1860. After 1927, the monastery of Montecassino became part of the then newly created province of Frosinone (Lazio, Italy). Completely destroyed during World War II, the monastery was rebuilt according to plans between 1948 and 1956. The main instruments used in the performances are piano, harmonium, flute, violin, and cello, of which the cello is considered the most important. This is confirmed by the important cello solo scores and methods kept in the local archives, which also seem to indicate a strong attachment to this instrument. The works are both sacred and secular. The sacred music dates from the 19th century, and the secular from the 17th century to the Neapolitan period at the end of the 19th century.The archive was preserved by Father Mauro Liberatore (1810-1879) from L'Aquila, Italy, who was also a performer and a music expert, and Father Placido Abella (1814-1876) from Syracuse.
