Refresh yourself with some of Baden-Powell's best-known songs. Baden Powell (1937-2000) was a famous guitarist and composer from Brazil, whose real name, read in Portuguese, is Baden Paeu di Acquino (his surname is di Acquino). Baden-Powell is known for a style that seamlessly blends classical musical techniques with elements of Brazilian music and jazz, and his "Songbook," published in three volumes by the German publishing house Tonos, is invaluable to guitarists exploring Brazilian music. In the works included in the Songbook, elements of samba, bossa nova, choro, and Afro-Brazilian rhythms can be heard, while complex melodies and innovative harmonies are also evident. Italian guitarist Andrea Monalda selected 18 songs from the "Songbook" and played them with great enthusiasm. The reason behind the relative freedom of interpretation is probably that the published score by Tonos is a transcription of Baden-Powell's recording (a common technique in popular music), so it was decided that there is a great deal of room for interpretation by the performers. The booklet (12 pages in English and Italian) includes a commentary by musicologist and composer Giovanni Guacciello.
