Two female choirs perform chants that supported the convent life of noble women The convent of Las Huelgas in Burgos, in the mountains of northern Spain, was founded in the 12th century. It was a special convent that accepted women of royalty and nobility, and their convent life was colored by a variety of Latin chants. The chants were compiled in the 14th century in the Codex Las Huelgas, which contains nearly 200 chants in total. Brilliant Classics plans to record all of them, and this 2-CD album is the first. Perhaps because the actual nuns vary in age, the recordings here were done by an adult women's choir and a girl's women's choir. This is an unexpected and unlikely project.
