It refers to a powerful 72-second radio burst observed in 1977, originating from the direction of Sagittarius, whose bandwidth and intensity suggested it might have been transmitted by extraterrestrial life. It is a well-known story that the astronomer who discovered this anomalous signal circled the now-iconic string of characters “6EQUJ5” on the printed data and wrote “WOW!” next to it.
