This is Soul Jazz Records' first foray into UK post-punk and punk-funk, and the first groundbreaking compilation to cross the boundaries between punk and dance music. It was the first time that UK post-punk and punk-funk bands from Manchester, Sheffield, Leeds, Bristol, London, and other parts of the North of England, which at the time was a bleak and industrial area, presented to the world the results of their longing for black American rhythms and their experiments with a sound that was unique at the time. The title of the album is derived from the song of the same name by The Slits. There is not a single boring song on In the Beginning.
