This is the tenth volume in APR's French Piano School French Piano School series, which presents important recordings by an often forgotten pianist who represented the French performance style of the first half of the 20th century! The complete recordings of Robert Lorta are now available. Robert Rolta (1885-1938) would undoubtedly have been remembered as one of the greatest French pianists of the 20th century, having made many recordings had he not suffered an untimely death from a chronic illness after serving in World War I. He was a pianist of the highest caliber, and his recordings of the music of Fauré and Debussy are among the most important of his career. He played a wide range of repertoire, including Fauré and Debussy, but Chopin was especially central to his art, and in 1912 he played the complete Chopin cycle in five concerts. He was the second pianist, after Backhaus, to record the complete "Exercises," and the fact that he did so before Cortot proves how highly regarded he was in France.Previous Lorta recordings have suffered from very poor transfers from the original 78 rpm SP records, but it is hoped that the new transfers by Mark Aubert-Sohn will bring these recordings into a new and much improved light.
