South London's jazz scene has been attracting attention as the epicenter of new music in recent years, with musicians such as Ezra Collective and Youssef Days popping up one after another with a hybrid appeal that is not bound by genre. Among them is Emma Jean Thackray, a multi-instrumentalist/producer/vocalist/DJ who is sometimes described as an outsider with her unique stance and flexible curiosity. She gained attention for her sound that crossovers the worlds of 70s P-funk and spiritual jazz/fusion into deep house with her EP "WALRUS" released on her own label in 2016 and "YELLOW" released in 2021, and now she is back in the UK. She will release her first new album on Bronswood Recordings / Parlophone Records, the label of DJ Giles Peterson, one of the most important figures in acid jazz in the UK. WEIRDO" is the first studio album in three years since the last one. As in the past, Emma Jean wrote and arranged all the songs, played all the instruments, recorded, mixed, engineered, and produced the album at her South London flat, and it is a mix of influences from various genres, from grunge, pop, and soul to P-funk and jazz. Her latest album is a testament to her extraordinary musicianship and fearless self-expression, mixing influences from a variety of genres, from grunge, pop, and soul to p-funk, jazz, and more. Originally conceived as a contemplation on neurodiversity and mental health, "WEIRDO" is a deeply personal yet universal album that was made possible through the unexpected loss of Emma Jean's longtime partner in January 2023. With its complex musical structure, raw emotion, and unwavering authenticity, "WEIRDO" is more than just an album. It is a masterpiece of spiritual resilience, a celebration of individuality, and a sublimation of a bold leap forward by an artist at the forefront of the contemporary UK music scene. Initially, the album was a way for me to process and come to terms with my own mental health issues. Later, it became a grief journal and, inevitably, my therapy.
