Cherry Red's 2019 set Sacred Kind of Love: The Columbia Recordings is a comprehensive five-disc box that rounds up all the officially released records Grover Washington, Jr. made for Columbia between 1987 and 1996. In total, the set contains six albums: Strawberry Moon (1987), Then and Now (1988), Time Out of Mind (1989), Next Exit (1992), All My Tomorrows (1994), and Soulful Strut (1996); additionally, there are two bonus cuts, "Heat Index" and "The Night Fantastic," both released on the 1999 compilation Prime Cuts. Although the music was recorded over the course of a decade, the records are all of a piece. While there are some variations -- All My Tomorrows finds Washington playing a set that leans toward more traditional jazz -- each album finds him working a clean, soulful groove, music that practically defines the smooth jazz genre. It's a hefty set, but it's handy for those who want to get all of Grover Washington, Jr.'s recordings in one affordable set. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
