The first Japan release of the fantastic sound recordings of the psychedelic pop band that burst onto the world scene from Singapore in the turbulent early 1970's! The hidden treasures of the pop heritage of The Beatles, Badfinger, The Hollies, The Zombies, and others are now being revealed! As a British colony, Singapore experienced an influx of culture and a guitar band boom in the 1960s, and the October Cherries emerged from the midst of it. In addition to their success in their home country, they were one of the first bands to expand into the United Kingdom and the Netherlands. However, they were hit hard by piracy of sound recordings and the law against long hair, and they had to start over. They decided to move their base of operations to Belgium and to work under the name of Tracks. Jay Shortum (vocals, bass), Peter Diaz (guitar), and Richard Kern (drums) released the album "Surprise, Surprise" (1974), which was mainly remakes from the October Cherries era. Released on the band's own Barr Records label, the album was a hit on the charts in Malaysia, Singapore's neighboring and larger music market, and was also popular among the Malay community in European countries. The sound is based on the "Pop Yeah Yeah Yeahs" that were popular in Malaysia in the 1960s, but with layers of guitars and synthesizers, approaching a psychedelic feel. The band also incorporated a contemporary 1970s sound, adding a rock flavor to "Surprise, Surprise," and simulating strings with synths on "Broken Chair. They also headed to England to record "One Fine Day" (1976) under the name Coal Tracks. In addition to a number of new originals, the album includes self covers of "One Fine Day," "Lay Down Your Love," and "This Is A Love Song.Mixed at the legendary Abbey Road Studios and mastered at Pye Studios, the album absorbs the spirit of England, the "home" of rock and pop. Even the same songs are arranged in a more basic way, revealing the core of the songs. The members returned to Singapore and resumed their activities as October Cherries. Jay Shortam passed away in 2019, but his signature song "Far Away Now" is still heard around the world today. Two albums from this period when they challenged the world are finally being released in Japan for the first time after half a century.
