This film is by no means a story about “finding oneself” through world travel. Though the protagonist is a dreamer, as he travels the globe due to unavoidable circumstances, he has no time to daydream about his ideal self. He moves forward, taking detours to reach his “goal.” The protagonist of this film is nothing more than a “process” toward that “goal”—nothing more than a “detour.” Of course, the real charm lies in the fact that he doesn’t realize these aren’t mere detours. Yet the protagonist does change. He isn’t searching for himself. He simply becomes someone else. Yes, the fact that Ben Stiller doesn’t shout out loud that “That’s what LIFE! is all about” is a testament to his class.
