CONVERGE, the band that continues to reign supreme in the hardcore/extreme music/aggressive sound, is led by its founder, the charismatic singer/art director Jacob Bannon, and is made up of an elite group of New England-based musicians. The super group has released a new album. UMBRA VITAE was founded by Jacob when he was working on an album with WEAR YOUR WOUNDS, a melancholic/alternative/art-rock band that he also plays with CONVERGE, and he wanted to "express our love for death metal, one of our roots, in a straightforward manner. The band started by replacing the rhythm section with WYW, which is also a super group in the US hardcore scene. As Jacob and the band members themselves say, their last album was reminiscent of NAPALM DEATH from the 90's onward, with a touch of death metal.In addition to this, this album highlights the band's admiration for Bay Area thrash metal, and their sharp riff work stands out. The presence of Jacob roaring with a metallic sound is still overwhelming, and has a different feel from that of recent CONVERGE albums, which have leaned more toward punk rock/alternative styles. The Japanese version of the album includes two previously unreleased takes as bonus tracks.
