Description:
The first all-American album by the prodigious pianist Daniil Trifonov! Pianist Daniil Trifonov left Moscow at a young age and began his life in the United States. Although steeped in the European tradition, he has found joy in his inquisitive mind, creative soul, and in expanding his pianistic repertoire. The current album traces Trifonov's American story, or immigrant journey in the "New World," through American piano repertoire ranging from jazz and swing to modernism, minimalism, and popular soundtracks. The album's main pieces are two great American piano concertos: the bold, jazzy Concerto in the Key of F, composed by George Gershwin in 1925, and the Mason Bates commissioned for Trifonov and premiered in 2022 with the Philadelphia Orchestra under Yannick Nézet-Séguin Vivacious Piano Concerto.Also included are Aaron Copland's Piano Variations (1930), a trifonov transcription of Art Tatum's 1949 recording "I Cover the Waterfront," a spacious, meditative, and harmonically rich version of Bill Evans' "When I Fall in Love," and themes from the Hollywood films "The Firm Law Firm" and "American Beauty.
