Description:

A tribute work by renowned producer Larry Klein, who shares his dear friend Leonard Cohen's humor, poetry, simple melodies, and even airs with his musicians, "Cohen and I have been friends since about 1982 and became especially close during the last 15 years of my life. Producer Larry Klein matched guest vocalists from various genres with "a band of some of the most visionary musicians in jazz" to create this Cohen tribute, which was nominated for 10 Grammy Awards and won four.He has produced albums such as Joni Mitchell's "Turbulent Indigo" and Tracy Chapman's "Our Bright Future". Larry Klein is a producer/musician/songwriter/composer who has played bass with such greats as Freddie Hubbard, Wayne Shorter, and Don Henley, and has collaborated with Warren Zevon and Bonnie Raitt. This work recalls the concept of producing "River: The Joni Letters," which was released by Herbie Hancock in 2007 and won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year (one of the singers on the album is Cohen). The core band (guitarist Norah Jones, Peter Gabriel, Gregory Porter, Sarah McLachlan, Luciana Souza, James Taylor, Iggy Pop, Mavis Staples, David Gray, and Nathaniel Rateliev), featuring artists such as Bill Frisell, saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins, pianist Kevin Hayes, and bassist Scott Corey) in collaboration. Also featured are Greg Reitz on pedal steel guitar and Larry Goldings on organ, who will be joined by the band's 1967 debut, Songs of Leonard Cohen, and their last album, released just days before his death in 2016, Songs of Leonard Cohen, which was released on the label's website. From his 1967 debut, "Songs of Leonard Cohen," to selections from his last album, "You Won't It Darker," released just days before his death in 2016, the album covers the astonishing range of Cohen's compositions, all given new life through thoughtful and unexpected arrangements and performances.
