Description:
This is a recording in Japan of Tatiana Nikolaeva, who is regarded as the one and only master J.S. Bach performer. The world of Bach, backed by her solid formative ability and intelligence, is brought back to life here. Included in the commentary is a new preface by Yoshiko Ikuma and a memoir "16 Years with Nikolaeva" by Tomoo Nojima, the director at the time. The world's first SACD retrospective of the analog masters! Mastered in pursuit of the original sound The latest mastering from the original analog master recorded at Victor Studio 1 under the condition of 76cm direct analog recording has been applied to the SACD! The first Japanese domestic recording by Tatiana Nikolaeva. The analog master tapes from that time have been unearthed, and the latest mastering has been done in the presence of recording director Tomoo Nojima, who has reviewed the power supply and equipment. Included are a retrospective by Tomoo Nojima and liner notes by Yoshiko Ikuma, who had interviewed the artist at the time. The sound recorded with the latest technology at the time has been brought back to life with even richer dynamics and beauty. After winning the International Johann Sebastian Bach Competition in Leipzig in 1950, which was held to commemorate the bicentennial of his death, Nikolaeva gained an international reputation as a leading Bach performer. Shostakovich, who was selected as a juror at the aforementioned competition, was greatly impressed by Nikolayeva's performance and composed "24 Preludes and Fugues" in 1951 (premiered in 1952), which is said to represent Soviet piano music in the 20th century, and dedicated the work to Nikolayeva.Nikolaeva made many recordings for the Melodia label and visited Japan frequently to record Bach's works with Victor. The recording of the works, initially as a joint production with Melodia and later as original recordings for Victor, began in 1977, and five albums (counting the average as one) were left behind from 1982 to 1991 with an intervening period. After the first recording in 1977, the sessions were recorded at the Imaichi Cultural Hall in Nikko, near where Nikolaeva herself preferred to stay at the time. Later, Victor recorded Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 live with Nikolaeva as the soloist at the "Tchaikovsky Last Concert" conducted by Fedoseyev in Osaka in 1993 (available as a SACD hybrid disc of this project in 2022 on NCS88013 NCS88013). Nikolaeva died the following year, so this disc was her last recording with Victor. This reissue was planned to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Nikolaeva's birth in 2024. Only the 1977 recording of "Invention and Sinfonia" for Victor was made as an analog recording, and subsequent recordings were made digitally. All Bach recordings left by Nikolaeva for Victor will be released in five titles. The analog recordings were reissued from the original analog master tapes in Victor's collection, and the digital recordings were re-mastered from the original masters. We pursued the original sound and aimed for the highest sound quality in the current state of the art. The process of SACD conversion is the same as for each previous project. (1/2)
