Description:

How did Taiwan New Cinema come into being? Where did Hou Hsiao-hsien (HHH) come from? And where is he headed? The film also includes interviews with filmmakers such as Chu Tien-Wen, who was writing the screenplay for "Flowers of Shanghai" with Hou at the time, and Wu Nien-Cheng, who led the Taiwanese New Cinema together with Hou, as well as "Children of the Past" (1985), "Summer Vacation in Winter" (1984), "The City of Sadness" (1989), "The City of Dreams" (1993), "The City of Dreams" (1994), and "The City of Dreams" (1995). (89), "A Dream Life" (93), and "A Melancholy Paradise" (96), and a tour of Fengshan, Jiufeng, Jinguashi, Pingxi, and Taipei, all of which are associated with the directors' works. The casual exchanges between these two well-meaning friends reveal Hou Hsiao-hsien's unadorned true face. Olivier Assayas ("Personal Shopper," "Paris in Summer Time"), now one of France's leading film directors, travels with Hou Hsiao-hsien ("Hou Hsiao-hsien") through Taiwan in this rare documentary that brings us closer to the true face of the director. HHH" is an acronym for Hou Hsiao-Hsien, the English name for Hou Hsiao-Hsien. Joining Hou Hsiao-hsien in the cast are Chu Tien-wen, who has written the screenplays for most of his films; Wu Nien-chen, who has led the Taiwanese New Cinema together with Hou; Du Du-tsu-ji, now a world-renowned sound director; and film critic and producer Chen Guofu. The film was made in 1984, before he made his directorial debut, and was produced by the Taiwanese New Cinema's most famous filmmaker, Chen Guofu. In 1984, before his directorial debut, Olivier Assayas, a film critic, was introduced to Taiwanese New Cinema by Chen Guofu, who first introduced Hou Hsiao-hsien to Europe. Since then, the two men have nurtured a friendship that transcends work, and even after his debut as a director, Assayas has always spoken of Hou Hsiao-hsien as a great influence on his work. It was only natural that he should be chosen to direct this film. The cinematography was shot by Eric Gauthier, a French cameraman who was also in charge of Hirokazu Kore-eda's "Truth. The film was recorded by Dou Douge, who also appears in the film.
