The world's first solo recording of a baroque salterio! The Salterio, a hammered dulcimer-shaped instrument that was widely popular in 18th century Italy, especially among female aristocrats and convent women. Franziska Freischender from Austria, a virtuoso Salterio player and researcher, has dedicated her life to playing and researching the instrument since her encounter with the 1725 Michele Balbi instrument in 2014, working on the reconstruction of undiscovered works and historical techniques. She currently teaches at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna and is a leader in the revival of this instrument. Her new album "solo un salterio" is the world's first solo Baroque salterio album. Although today the salterio is more of an accompaniment instrument, it was widely used in courts, monasteries, and churches in the 17th and 18th centuries. This album includes a sonata by the Italian virtuoso Florido Ubaldi (a newly discovered work), anonymous concertos and dances from Spain and Germany, an elegant minuet by Manuel Canales, and a new work by Freixandel himself. This is a valuable program, most of which are world premiere recordings.The performance makes full use of three historical techniques, including hammering (battuto) and pizzicato with fingernails and plectrums. From soft, contemplative sounds to gorgeous, light-hearted melodies, the performance brings out the full range of Sartelio's diverse timbres.
