Description:

Guillaume Martignet & Etsuko Hirose play the genius Belgian composer, Bialin! Adolphe Bialin, the unknown genius Belgian composer! Guillaume Martignet, who regularly performs with Martha Argerich, Ivry Gitlis, Mischa Maisky and others! Guillaume Martignet and Etsuko Hirose present a masterpiece by Adolphe Bialin (1871-1916), an unknown genius Belgian composer. A contemporary of another Belgian genius, Guillaume Lecoux (1870-1894), and close to his seniors Franck and Dandy, Bialan was gifted from an early age and trained as a cellist while studying at the conservatories of Brussels and Ghent. He was also a composer of various works and won the Grand Prix de Rome in Belgium in 1901, but ultimately he was only active in the provinces as a teacher at the Conservatoire de Charleroi, where he is now little known. The cello sonatas of his later years, published in 1916, showcase his compositional technique and fervent expression, and contain an incredible wealth of ideas that are discovered with each listen. Guillaume Martinier and Etsuko Hirose have recorded this album in the hope of making this work accessible to a wider audience. It is coupled with Franck's Cello Sonata (a cello version of the Violin Sonata that Franck himself approved of arranging), which shares the same supple melody and use of a circular form. French cellist Guillaume Martinier first studied with Marc Drobinsky, a pupil of Mstislav Rostropovich, and then moved to the United States to study with Bernard Greenhouse, founder of the Beaux-Arts Trio. After returning to Japan, he joined Philippe Muller's class at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris. He has won prizes in seven international competitions and joined the orchestra at the age of 13, performing many concertos in the repertoire with the Moscow Musica Viva, the Kazan Symphony Orchestra, and the Ural Philharmonic Orchestra. As chamber music partners, they regularly perform with Martha Argerich, Ivry Gitlis, Mischa Maisky, etc. Etsuko Hirose, winner of the 1999 Martha Argerich International Piano Competition, and Guillaume Martignet, a talented Paris-based pianist, will perform in September 2021 in They met in Yekaterinburg, Russia, and as early as February 2022, they wanted to perform as a duo and record a concert program as is, which led to the creation of this album.
