Ariadne on Naxos", one of the masterpieces of the collaboration between Hoffmanstahl and Richard Strauss (1864-1949), was originally a light story written as a play within a play of Molière's "The Townsman Nobles". However, after many twists and turns, a prologue was added and several revisions were made, and it is now familiar in its current form. It is a slapstick tale of singers, composers, and performers' behind-the-scenes bargaining to stage an opera based on Greek mythology, and the end result of their broken negotiations, a mixture of tragedy and comedy. This satirical and ironic Strauss opera has delighted audiences in a variety of productions. However, Katharina Thoma, the director of this production, has attempted to give a deeper meaning to this "little story" by setting it during World War II.Even near the end of the prologue, when the composer hesitates as he embodies his ideas, Thomas does not allow him a moment of deep contemplation with the images and sounds of heavy bombing and looming fighter planes. And all the characters are in pain, delusional and remorseful. There is no doubt that giving this opera a sense of melancholy is an utterly wonderful conceit. Naxos Japan
