Description:

"Death in Venice," written by German author Thomas Mann based on his own experiences, is an extremely aesthetic work in which the elderly protagonist falls in love at first sight with a beautiful young boy he encounters while traveling in Venice, becomes ensnared by the spell of his beauty, and ultimately meets his end there. The film directed by Visconti left an even deeper impression thanks to the effective use of Mahler’s “Adagietto” and continues to enjoy legendary popularity to this day. This opera by Britten (1913–1976) is based on the same source material, but by revealing aspects distinct from Visconti’s interpretation, it creates a world uniquely its own. The soundscape is much more detached, and the production offers a perspective that stands in stark contrast to the voluptuous beauty of Visconti’s film; the character of Tazio—a “symbol of beauty”—is portrayed by a silent dancer, which serves to highlight his innocence. The more fantastical the stage setting, the more this story highlights humanity’s “longing for beauty” and, in proportion to that, the “ugly aspects of reality.” Director Deborah Warner employs simple sets and costumes, as if attempting to distance herself from the anguish of an artist writhing in a fleeting dream. John Graham-Hearl, who sings the title role, studied at the Royal Academy of Music in Cambridge and is a tenor who has garnered attention, having won the prestigious “Franco Avviati Prize” in Italy in 2012. His powerful, lyrical voice is a talent that bodes well for the future. Andrew Shore, a veteran British singer who excels in a wide range of roles, is considered the face of English National Opera. Born in Oxfordshire, England, in 1959. She originally directed plays by Shakespeare, Brecht, and others, but following acclaimed productions such as *Don Giovanni* at Glyndebourne, *Wozzeck* at Opera North, and Purcell’s *Dido and Aeneas* with Les Arts Florissants, she has made significant strides in this field as well. In 2006, she was awarded the Order of the British Empire. Naxos Japan
